"What Do You Think?" – A Game to Get Students Talking!

Hello everyone! It's John from Cool English, and I'm excited to introduce this week's activity, titled "What do you think?". Engage your students in vibrant conversations and discussions, making it a lively way to kick-start the new school year.

The game offers three difficulty levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced. Here's how it works:

1. Set Up: Organize the class into teams. For individual learners, it'll be a one-on-one discussion with you. Begin by selecting one of the nine available topics.

2. Initiate the Debate: Once you read out the topic question, one team picks a stance - either 'yes' (they agree) or 'no' (they disagree). After selecting, a 60-second timer kicks in, prompting the team to passionately argue their viewpoint. Next, click the opposite stance to trigger another 60-second countdown, allowing the other side to present their counterarguments.

3. Scoring the Game: There's versatility in awarding points:

Award points to the team with the most persuasive arguments.

Give points for each well-constructed argument from both teams.

Teams making fewer than "x" mistakes get a point.

Alternatively, forget about the points and enjoy a rich, meaningful dialogue.

4. Rotate and Continue: After both intervals conclude, head back to the topics and pick a new one.

You can initiate the discussions in class and then assign more for writing exercises. Encourage students to create both yes and no arguments on an issue.

I hope your students like these games as much as mine, and please check back next week for more on coolenglish.net.

Cheers, John
