Hey guys, John from Cool English with another quick teaching idea, I call picture dissection and it is a great game to practice parts of speech and sentence forming. You can get some interesting pictures on the internet, in magazines/books, or use my activity at coolenglish.net, I try to find pictures with some actions and maybe something different or interesting.
1. Pass out a picture or show one on the board/screen. Now tell the class they need to dissect the picture into its parts (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs). I normally only use nouns and verbs for basic levels, then I add adjectives for intermediate and adverbs for advanced. So, either in groups or with me they try to write/speak the main nouns, then we do the verbs, and so on.
2. After we have discussed each set of words, I tell my students to put them all together and form a phrase that describes the picture.
3. I award points for correct sets of words and points for correct phrases.
That’s it, just a great way to visualize the different parts of speech and how to put them together and form a phrase. As always please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
John
Thank you for sharing the engaging ideas. I tried "what am I" in the class and students were so amused and enjoyed all the activities.
Thanks
