Hey everyone, John from Cool English with your weekly new activities. Today, I have a fun game based on the famous comic strip "The Far Side" by Gary Larson, which ran from 1979 to 1995. It was hugely popular in the United States for its satire and black comedy. This game is best for intermediate to advanced groups. You can use it with basic groups but in a slightly different way.
The Far Side – multiple choice
In this game I ask students to choose one of the six pictures. They then must guess which of the three options is the original, written by the creator. If they are correct, award a point and move on to another picture. The team with the most points in the end wins.
For more basic students, or just as a variation, I ask them to create their own phrases for the pictures or simple try to describe them. If necessary, I will provide some key words.
For more advanced students, ask them to explain the joke to you. Maybe go over the concepts of puns vs. displacement in comedy.
