IHOP MENU & MINIMAL PAIRS

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

Hey everyone, John from Cool English with two new activities to share. A fun menu with a picture dictionary and a minimal pair listening activity.

First is the IHOP (International House of Pancakes) interactive breakfast menu game. I have the actual menu from this popular American chain. There are six categories, like beverages or omelets, and each has ten words inside the boxes. I challenge my students to explain those words to me. I give them time in groups to talk about them. Then we check their answers, awarding points if you want to gamify it. If you click on a word, it goes to a picture and definition. I find this makes it easy to illustrate the vocabulary without leaving the activity.

This activity is very versatile. You can use it for reading, pronunciation, role play, travel review, food vocab review, games, etc. I ask them to review it for homework and write ten words that are the most (difficult, interesting, useful, simple, etc.). My students love to use menus in class, and I am sure yours will too.

The second is a minimal pair listening activity that I call Similar Sentence Listening. Students will see two similar phrases, then listen to a longer sentence that includes one of the two phrases. Ask them to choose which one they heard. For extra difficulty, I ask them to write or repeat the whole sentence. I am still working on this activity and plan to make more at varying levels soon.

hope you find these useful and let me know if you have any feedback.

John
