Hey everyone, John from Cool English here and I wanted to share a great activity I play with my basic level students in our first class. It's a great way to get them speaking and the repetition helps with memorizing the verbs and the structures. I have since learned to adapt it with my intermediate and advanced students to great success.
First, you can use this interactive activity for free on my site or you can just write down a list of basic verbs on the board in a grid.
Teach the verbs and the structure
Do you + verb
yes, I do / no, I don't.
Second, have the students ask each other questions using the verbs.
ex. Do you drink Coca-Cola?, Do you work?
You can award points for either just the correct question or question + answer. Students can only use each verb once.
Third, you can adapt it for more advanced students by changing structures or verb levels.
- Does + he/she + verb. ex. Does your mother eat pizza?
- Wh- + do/does + subject + verb? ex. Where do you work? How often do you hide things from your parents?
- Have you ever + verb? ex. Have you ever ridden a horse?
- Modal Verb + subject + verb? ex. Can you play the piano? Would you give me a hand?
I hope some of you find this helpful. Please let me know if you have any doubts.
John
